I made this dress for a client going to a wedding in a sunny climate. I loved it so much, I went back to buy extra fabric to make myself a dress. Oh don't hold your breathe I have many, many, many of these impulse buys, or should I say good intention buys. Never mind, even if I don't get round to making it for myself, I am sure someone will turn up wanting a dress from the fabric. You may have noticed I have used the dress as my blog background. At least this way I can be seen to be wearing it, be it on my blog.

Today is my birthday and I have received so many good wishes on Facebook, I am touched. This community is so so supportive, bearing in mind we don't even know each other, other than the odd post. The love from these well wisher have made my day.
WHY?
I attend an interview today, I so wanted this job, as it was just right and the money was right. But unfortunately I failed the first test as I had no idea how to work it out. However I felt I did well on the other two test. Coming home I opened my email to find pending post on Facebook, its been a long long time since I have received so many well wishes and it has made my day. As for the interview, well tomorrow is another day.

Black Wool Print Skirt

This beautiful wool skirt was sold before I had a chance to list it in my shop, and I have one order pending, I think it is a winner.
A classic pencil skirt set on a wide waistband, with a bold tone on tone print of squares and circles in red and white.
Skirt is fully lined and comes just below the knee on an average height on someone 5’7" (170cm).

Disabled Clothing

I was asked to design an adult bib and make a couple of coats for disabled wheelchair bound clients in a sheltered home. The brief was they needed to be fashionable and functional.

Where do I start, Well fashion is what some of us use to assert our personality and identity, additionally we use fashion to enhance or hide our imperfection, and I would argue that is the same if not more so for disabled people. As these clients spent the day in a wheelchair which encases their back for support, it was important that the coats were comfortable with design features that enabled the care attendants to get the coat on and off with ease.

Some of the design featured I styled the coat with were a trapeze or wide Aline shape which helps conceal excess bulk around the stomach, and would allow for a blanket to be placed underneath wrapped around the legs for extra warmth. I added raglan sleeves as they are easy to get in and out of and adding shoulder pads can enhance the silhouette of the coat.

The coat was designed with a longer front which falls over the knees and a shorter back, so in the sitting position the back falls to the seat, and the client does not have excess bulky fabric bunching behind their back waist .

The false front design give the impression to the outside world of a normal coat front fastening design, but the opening is at the back and fastened with Velcro, which allows for ease in placing, without too much discomfort to the client.

I think I have met the brief for both the clients and the care attendants.

Holiday buys

Hand up those of you who have bought a wonderful piece of fabric on your travels, full of good intentions to make something amazing, but once home they get relegated to a bottom draw. Guilty as charged.

A client was given two pieces of fabric which has been langushing in her bottom draw for years, as she is not a sewer she asked me to make these up. With no real idea of what she wanted, I made these two tunic, making use of design in the fabric which graduates from the hemline getting less intense as it rises to the neckline. I think she plans to wear it with black trousers.

Blue and Cream

I love blue and white porcelain, which inspired me to buy this fabric.

Blue and white porcelain originated in China. My fabric originated from my local fabric store, that I am afraid is as much as I know about its origin.

The willow pattern is considered one of the most popular blue and white or should I say blue and cream porcelain designs. although the design of this fabric is not willow, you must admit it is really striking.

I am really please with the end result, and I feel it will make a perfect dress for Christmas. I have added loads of details, like the mock wrap which has been finished with a flattering pleat detail. I have added spaghetti straps to the fitted bodice fo added extra security.

I hope you will agree this is a beautiful dress. I have since made a suit and a dress from this fabric, sorry no time to take photos. I will be making a jacket with the last piece. Hopefully I will have time to take photos before the client picks up.

New Blog Name

I started blogging to promote my Etsy shop which I named Rose Glen, then Rich Mix Fashion. My post have developed as a showcase for my custom made items, as the demand for these grew, I decided to create a dedicated label to use for my custom made clothing, I have now decided to streamline my image, by renaming my Etsy shop and my blog which will now be called Cheeky Rose Studio. I hope you like it, and will continue to follow.

Managing Doubts and Custom Orders

This dress formed part of my 1950s inspired collection in the summer and recently I received a custom order to make an identical copy for a client. I managed to complete the dress as per the client request, but as I did not have enough fabric to finish the pockets, I used some creative licence and trimmed the pocket flap with black. I think it worked really well with the print of the dress. What do you think?

Custom orders are always a challenge as each clients body is individual to the person. There are times when having completed a garment great doubts set in, as the shape is not what I expect of the finished garment, but once the client has it on, doubts fall away. This customer order was one of those doubtful moments, but thankfully the fit was perfect, and the client was over the moon with the result, so much so, she order has another dress. Keep a look out I will be posting them here.

Summer dress with an Edge

I made this dress way back in the summer in this pretty rose print and one customer fell in love with it, but wanted it to look less girly and more edgy.

So here it is, with sleeves, and an amazing white rose print on a black background.

The skirt like the first dress is made with a full circle skirt, which means if you sat down the skirt will form a full circle around your legs.

Liberty Print Dress

This delightful dress is made from a liberty print. The neckline was changed from a skirt neck to a V neckline, as the customer did not feel comfortable with the collar.

For ease in dressing there is button front to the waist and a side zip closure, long enough to allow the client to step into the dress.

The dress was made for a late holiday wardrobe and the clients loved it so much, she is coming back for another one. I can see it made up in a lightweight wool fabric with three quarter length sleeves, but the clients wants a cotton print.

Second Time Around

This classic skirt suit is made from a luxurious slub silk fabric.This is the second time I am making this suit, the customer loved it so much after 8 year she wanted another one made in exactly the same fabric. I convinced her to have it made in the fabric shown. Her reason for wanting another one made were, she received numerous complements, it fitted comfortable and she love the casual look.

This suit may not be to everyone taste and it is not what I would wear, but I think it looks really smart and I love how it has turned out. I hope the clients feels the same way.

New Job - Not Sure

As you may or may not know I was made redundant over 5 months ago. Finally I have a job as a Mental Health Advocate, which started on Monday, but I am not sure about it. Why am I having doubts, well it the working environment. I am a very proactive person and I have identified several gaps which could make the project run more efficiently, but the manager is not open to change. For example, currently client contact are logged on a word document, and I feel this would be more efficient if placed on a data base. I was told emphatically no by the Manager. After all contact has been logged, someone has to manually count how many times a client has been seen, who saw the client, their age, etc, etc. This could all be generated from the database AHHHHHHHHHHHHH. Just talking, writing about it is giving me a sinking feeling.

On a positive note, this role requires developing indepth knowledge of the practical application of the law, how this is applied in supporting clients, their entitlements and those accountable for providing care or support for clients. I am really excited about this part of the job and I plan to stick it out for as long as I can, as this will be great when applied to my existing knowledge

In the meantime I am taking my sons advice, take a back seat and rein in my enthusiasm.

Puss Pelmet

What you are asking is a puss pelmet. According to my daughter it is the name for my latest custom order. I was commissioned to make this delightful feathered skirt, originally 12 inches long, for a sweet sixteen birthday girl. But on completion mum was a wee bit concerned about the length and after some thoughtful persuasion, daughter agreed that the skirt should be lengthened to protect her modesty.

I lengthened this skirt by replacing the small waistband with a wider. As nice as this skirt looks, the fabric is a pain to work. Cutting and sewing the quills of the feathers have blunted my scissors and machine needle, the needle is cheap to replace, the scissors hmmm, Oh and did I mention the mess that is generated when cutting the fabric. Although I have wiped clean all the surfaces in an attempt to get rid of the bits of feathers, I am still finding bits which have floated off and settled in odd places.

That said I have never worked with this type of material and I have enjoy the process of working out how to get the best finish from the feathered fabric. The main thing is both mother and daughter are pleased with the result. Job Done

A Dress with a Twist

I have been so busy with custom orders I have had little time to make for my Etsy Shop, however I am putting together a small collection to put in my shop, the only problem will be if they sell at the craft fairs.

In a past post I posted one of two dresses I made for a client and here is the second dress. I know summer is over but great if you are off to sunny climates.

The bodice of the dress is cut in the same style of the first dress. A halter neck bodice, boned with shaped and defined bust cups.The twist is instead of the straight wrap skirt, this one has a full pleated skirt. Kinda hard to pick my favourite as they both have qualities I love.

I love rummaging through charity shops and car boot sale for old china tea cups. I have a very small collection which have been displayed above my kitchen cabinets. They are so beautiful and bring a touch of gentle elegance to my modern kitchen.

Whilst browsing I came across this beautiful Alfred Meakin serving dish. I fell in love with the hexagonal shape and it fitted in just right with the tea cup, Its in great condition and would grace any dinner table.

Catching Up

Lately I have been playing catch up, as I have several custom order to complete and today I collected 10 metres of amazing fabric, which I can't waits to start on. But before I start I need to tidy my work room because it looks like a bomb has hit it, No, no pics as it too awful to show you. The room is a wreck because when I am working on a new custom order I don't really clear up as I go. I tend to wait until I have finished and then I have a blitz, ready for the next project.

You know something it worth it to see the end product, here is one of two dresses I completed for a client going on a cruise.

This halter dress is made in a very bold red rose bud print. The bodice is boned with formed bust cups. The skirt has been designed with a mock wrap which I love as there is no threat of too much leg being exposed when walking or seated. A great dress for making a impact, What do you think?

Made it Market Fair

On Saturday I took part in the Made it Market Fair in the city of Cambridge, a beautiful city renowned for it university. The fair was held at Cambridge Guildhalll, in my oppion a very well organised fair, with lovely personal touches, such as a informaiton pack which included a canvan bag and unlimited coffee, tea and biscuts laid on for the stall holders

The footfall was impresseive with a contast flow of people coming in, which really indicated the level of advertisment generated by the organisers. This I feel contributed to the sales I received on the day, unfortunately I cannot show you all as I did not have time to take pictures, the skirt is one of the sales received on the day.

There are also a couple orders still to be confirmed, based on the level of interest I have booked to attend the next fair in November The only downside of the day was parking, having had a really successful day, I stayed to have a coffe a lovely cafe' near the car park. Brimming with success I returned to my car, first stopping to pay the parking fee. OMG £26.00, yes you heard right. £26.00. I will not be stopping for coffee next time and I am definitely going to research for an alternative parking for the next fair.

Paying The Bills

I was made redundant at the end of March, Ooooh, I don’t want to even think about it. Although I have been desperately trying to find a job, nothing is coming through. I am awaiting confirmation of a job, but in the mean time I have to find ways of earning, as the bills don’t know what redundancy is.

To keep some money coming in you will have seen some of the custom orders that I have been producing. There is also my Etsy shop in which I sell a range of clothing which I make. I have also been participating in several craft fairs, I will be attending one this Saturday.

Orders from the craft fairs and custom orders keep me very busy. I also love sharing what I have made but unfortunately I don’t always have time to take pictures before the orders get snapped up or items I have made for the craft fairs get sold. I had planned to put the new stuff I make for craft fairs in my Etsy shop and on my website, but this does not alway happen, oh well at least they are selling.

Here is one of the custom orders I made recently and was able to take photos of. I love this dress, like a few of the dresses I made this summer; this has a vintage inspired feel. The dress is fitted to the bodice with the front neckline higher that the back, this is set on a full circle skirt. I think it’s beautiful. What do you think?

Another Custom Order

This is one of my latest makes. Its a size 6uk or 4us. Wow, I hear you say. Well curves comes in all sizes and this dress would also look great on a curvier lady.

The dress has a deep plunge neckline with a high back neckline, giving the impression of a halter neck, but without the exposed back. The bodice sits on a full gathered skirt and the dress is lined in a vibrant red lining. Heart breaking stuff. I have finished it off with a a contrasting belt which ties at the front. The dress looks great but I am biased, how about you, do you like it and would your wear it.

Sold at Wells next the Sea

I attended the Wells next the Sea Carnival Craft on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday was a pretty lively day, with a quieter day on Sunday. It was a great weekend and the feedback I received was really great, validating the reasons for continuing to work on my craft.

I sold a few items on Saturday and Sunday, and although I did not make a great deal of money, it was great fun meeting new people and hearing their comments, it’s a really great feeling

Attending craft fairs has not only helped me to market my products but also to gauge my target audience.

Learning from Experience

I did a craft fair over the weekend, what a waste of time, well not quite.

I met some lovely crafter and enjoyed hearing their stories. Also it was great browsing through their products. As always it was good hearing from others positive feedback about my products. But quite discouraging as I didn’t sell anything, and sadly I was not the only one, all the other crafters had a bad day.

Having spent the first day slowing losing the will to live, I decided that I was not coming back on the Sunday, although I had already paid for my stand, but I figured the cost of petrol, wear and tear on my car, food and drink, and taking nothing was too high a price to pay to stand and not even give out one business card. But stupidly I changed my mind because the organizers decided to take the entrance fee for the public away.

Lets me explain, everything was right for this fair, the location was great as there was an established craft village nearby, entrance to which was free, and the craft fair was part of a Kio exhibition. On the second day there was a car and boot sale. So what went wrong, the organizers were charging £5.00 entry fee, consequently the people who came in were not here for craft, some if not most of them hardly gave us a side way glance, they were there for the Koi.

As most of us decided that we were not coming back on the second day, to appease us the orgnansier decided move the entrance kiosk, which would mean that anyone could browse the craft without having to pay but pay to an entrance fee to see the Koi exhibition. However on the Sunday we were told that they had changed their mind. I wish I had walked out, as had one of the crafters, but sadly I stayed and finally along with most of the crafters walked packed up early and headed home.

I have done a couple of fairs over this year and I have learned a lot along the way. I am now recognizing the ones that match my products; this is a combination of things, such as the client group, the area, the location and attitude of organizers.

This was a good learning experience and although I would rather not to have done it, it was good, because I now recognize the fairs that match my product; what I need to be aware of when booking a fair, such as the likely client group, which will depend on the area, the location and attitude of the organizers.

This has not put me off as I will be attending the Wells next the Sea Craft Fair on Saturday and Sunday 6th and 7th August, so if you are in the area come by and say hello.

1950s Inspired Collection

I love the 1950s era as it epitomizes grace and elegance, while being flamboyant and glitzy, as depicted by movie stars, Audrey Hepburn in breakfast at Tiffany’s and Grace Kelly.

This fashion era has been the inspiration for my latest creations, which will all be available in my Etsy shop for custom order only.

Dress these up by adding red lipstick, pearls and high heel plus a lot of attitude and you too can be a true 50s diva.

Rhapsody is a vintage inspired full circle skirt, made in a bright floral fabric with hues of aqua, red and green.

The Merry go Round was a custom order for a client, she choose the fabric, you may recognize it from my shop (the Merry Go Round Sundress), I must admit I would not have even considered this fabric for the skirt, but I must say it really look great.

Mum Knows Best

I have an off white carpet in my lounge, yes I can hear the cries "WHY". Well it looks good. I had it laid about 10 years ago, and it has stood the test of red wine, cranberry juice, curry, coffee and much more.

Not my carpet, but kinda what it looked like

However lately it been looking tired and dirty in a couple of places, especially heavy traffic areas, yet the rest of the carpet looks great. One of my goals was to change this carpet but unfortunately funds are very limited, so no chance of this happening soon.

I have tried shampooing regularly but it still looks ugly. So as a last resort I decided to check out new flooring, I was going to opt for laminate. But I changed my mind after visiting my mum who recently had workmen in, yes you can imagine the condition her carpet was left it. But you know her carpet look great.

How? I asked had she got it look so clean. Washing up powder came the reply. Yes you heard right; Washing up powder; Well you are already guessing what I did next. As soon as I arrived home I rolled up my sleeves and mixed a solution of water and washing up powder and got to work on my carpet.

OMG! I have a brand new carpet, the grubby area that distressed me so much has gone. I wish I had taken some photo before hand to show you, but I was too excited by the results happening right before my eyes. Now I can keep my carpet for a few more year.

My own Handmade Clothing Labels

I have been toying with the idea of having new custom labels made for my clothes. But the price have been a bit off putting. So I did a google search on how to make clothing labels. I found several, showing a variety of ways to create your own personal clothing labels. This one from Ehow and this one from Patchworkpottery Both basically uses the same process and very easy to make up.

So armed with the necessary equipment

Twill tape

Pack of iron transfer paper

Printer paper for testing

Scissor

Iron and Ironing board

Computer design programme ( I used publisher)

Inject printer set at mirror image (this is very important)

I started the process of creating my own label
1: I choose a blank label template from publisher. My chosen design gave me 30 labels per sheet of paper.There is quite a selection so you can choose what size you would like, depending on your final fabric choice

2: I made sure that my design was centred to fit onto my twill tape allowing enough selvage for turning to sew in raw ends. (although the transfer seals the ends so it may not need to be turned under.

3: I printed a test copy setting my printer at "mirror image". If you don't do this your final transfer print will come out back to front. Once I was satisfied I printed out my design on transfer paper, following the manufactures instructions.

4: I then cut a strip of three images, leaving the rest for another when needed

5: Laying the twill tape flat, I placed the transfer print side down onto the twill tape and pressed into place with the iron for approximately 1 min.

6: I allowed the tape to cool then peeled off the paper backing

7: I am so excited, my own label cut and ready to be added to my own finished garment

I am really pleased with the result, this is so simple to complete and great satisfaction in knowing that I have made this. I am planning on making my own care labels and I will post here once I have completed this process.

New York

My sister treated my niece and I to a 5 day shopping experience in New York. We stayed in a hotel on 39th street. The location was great, with a view of the Chrysler Tower and it was within walking distance of Grand Central Station and easy access for restaurants and all the places we wanted to visit.

I had never been to America let alone NY and I approached this journey with nervous anticipation, having heard so many tales of this great city. My daughter assured me that I would love NY, having spent four of the five days in this bustling city, I am left with mixed feelings.

New York City conjoures up for me an adults playground, where buildings are fighting for precedent and anything anything goes. Having said that I enjoyed this trip, The high point for me was a trip up the the Empire Sate Building, what a view, and the historical commentary was well worth $10.00. Would you believe that we met a group who were from the very town that I came from and his mum lives two streets away from me, this world can seem so small sometimes

Second was a trip to Woodbury Common Shopping Outlet in Central Valley. I loved this as it was hassle free with a great range of named brand stores. The drive up made the experience truly memorable as it gave me an opportunity to see the other side of New York, in my mind New York consisted of the city of NY and high buildings which dominate the landscape, not so, it consist of much much more. We drove through rolling green county side, beautiful lakes and fresh air, saw reindeer's sauntering across busy road. just lovely.

In New York City we made it to the Statue of Liberty, but unfortunately we could only walk around the grounds as entrance into the stature t was booked until November. We also visited Time Square, the Garment district. and ground Zero, nothing much to see there, but it felt right to visit.

I love small independent stores, so Macy and Century 21 did not do it for me, although both offered great clothing at reasonable prices if you are prepared to search.

Central park and Bowling Green Park were great places, they offered a place to chill out at the end of the day, we even had a take away breakfast at Bowling Green.

This was a shopping trip to celebrate my niece 21st, who sufferers from learning difficulties and her attention span is limited so there was little time for cultural tours. My daughter feel I need to see the cultural New York to make a valid judgement so I am reserving judging this city until, well until .......

Ooh I almost forgot, we took a trip down to Harlem, and had a lovely meal at Sylvia's. definitely worth a visit the food was great.

Selling on line is no easy ride; it requires a lot of hard work to encourage customers and instill confidence in my products. EBay is an example of the confidence that is instills in clients, as most of us including me have bought from EBay. Yes I am aware the process is slightly different, but the principal is the same, like you I trust that the person who receives my order will not only provide what I ordered but the quality that I would expect.

To the Crafters of Wells Next The Sea

Last weekend I traveled up to Wells Next the Sea in Norfolk to take part in a craft fair. Because of the distance I decided to us it as an opportunity to have a short break and see the this lovely area. On the Friday I dully booked into a hostel. Oh I can hear you philistines, a hostel yes against my better judgement I booked into one, because I had limited finances. The cheapest BB I could find was £70.00 a day. The hostel was £36.40 for two days, a bargain. I would have to bunk with three other women, but hey at I figured I would only be sleeping there.

As it turned out the location was beautiful Wells next the Sea Youth Hostel is a beautiful converted church hall is set in a beautiful area with fantastic facilities. the manager was so accommodating, as I was very late in booking in, he arranged for the key to be placed in a convenient place for me. Having found the key I tiptoed up to my room to be met by the sound of snoring. On my bunk was fresh laundered linen and thankfully my bed was on the lower bunk. I fumbled in the dark in the dark trying to make my bed in an effort not to disturb the other two occupants. In the morning I took a shower, in a very clean mold free wide shower room, this is much more than I can say for some hotels I have stayed in, although I did not use the rest of the facilities the rooms were large and airy with a well equipped kitchen. I met the fourth member in the evening, the ladies were really friendly and I received an invitation to visit should I be in Wales. You know something I would totally recommend staying in one of these hostel, so much so I have registered as a member, and as I have never been to Cornwall and Devon I will be using this as a means of accommodation.

What of my day at the craft fair, first I must tell you about the view that I was met with, just beautiful view in the first picture. The second shows the same view with the tide out. I would not like to be one of those caught in low tide, on a plus point, you can just walk to the beach.

I had seen some really lovely pictures of beach huts on the Wells website, so I decided to go in seach of them. I found some beautiful hisorical building like this amazing Granary which has been converted into luxury flats ,looking over the harbour .

After a slow relaxing walk I finally came across the huts and I couldn't resist taking my own pictures.

The walk back was jus as pleasurable, taking a stroll trhough the pinewoods

Oh the fair it was great, I met some really lovely people, and I will certainaly be going back there.

Crazy Week

This week has been pretty crazy and it is not over yet. I visited the dentist on Monday, and he advised a root canal job, after playing around with my teeth, he sent me off to make an appointment for the following week to finish the job off.

But it has finished me off. Due to his poking around I have caught an acute infection in that area. Now one side of my mouth looks lop sided due the large marble size ball which is growing there, and the pain, OH!! the pain, did I mention it was painful. Well I now have a dose of anti biotic and ibuprofen to take. Although I had taken my first dose. I must admit I had to take a pain killer during the night as the pain was so unbearable.

I am hoping that the medication kicks in, as I mentioned in my last post I am attending a fair on Saturday and I have been trying to get some new items made to take along.

Puckeridge Arts and Craft Fair

I attended the Puckeridge Arts, Craft and Gift Fair on Saturday which was hosted by the lovely Victoria of Butterfly Crafts These cakes were are great success selling out before the end of the day. They looked lovely but unfortunately I could not eat any due to my gluten intolerance

Although it threatened to rain the weather prevailed, which meant we saw a steady flow of customers coming through the door. It was a good day for me, as my Rose Glen collection was very well received with one customer likening the quality of my work to that of Whites, accolade indeed.

Over the past weeks I had created some new items to take to the fair, these proved to be successful with the customers, and I received several enquires for custom orders. This Maxi dress was ordered from someone going on a cruise, and the Summer Shift Dress was order in a smaller size, one of my favourites in the collection. This Green Ruffle skirt was also a favourite, wowing a lot of the customers. This will soon be available in my Rose Glen Store

Next weekend I am in Wells-next-the-sea on the north Norfolk coast, isn't this just a cool name. I booked this fair because I liked the look of the area, you must admit it looks really pretty, I can't wait to get there. The fair is over two days, so I am going to book into the local youth hostel to save on cost, first time I have even booked into a youth hostel.

My Week

Being unemployed yet again is hard, but I am ever optimistic.
On Monday I met with an old friend to discuss setting up workshop. In the afternoon I kept my dentist appointment. Not an appointment I like to keep. I have to go back in two weeks time.
On Tuesday I posted off another job application
On Wednesday they responded, but still I have to wait to see if I am shortlisted

I also went to look at a meeting room with a view to holding workshops and individual consultation. Its a great place, not sure about the stairs a bit steep. You can check it out here .

I visited a friend and hemmed her dress which was too long, she is the mother of the bride.
Then picked up a roll of calico and interfacing for my daughter. Finally got home about 12.midnight.
On Thursday I picked up my new glasses, couldn't extend my arms any longer.
I also checked out some chairs to put in the workshop.

On Friday I visited my mum and sister, cleaned up my sisters garden. I also picked two boxes of clothes, shoes never used, and handbags to put on eBay for her. Pity she is smaller than me and her feet is bigger than mine.

Today Saturday I have spent the best part of today taking photo and putting my sisters stuff on eBay

Tomorrow I am going to finish off my sister garden and clean my mothers garden

Among some of the clothes my sister gave me were a few thinks I made for her about 5 years ago. Here are two of the skirts I think they still look great, then I am biased.

Oh and the skirt I made last week, my customer has received it and she said "its stunning"

Last week I attended a local fair and sold this skirt.

I bought the fabric form a very well know department store, with the intention of making a skirt for myself, but I hate waste, so decided to make the skirt to fit the fabric, which meant it was too big for me. My daughter was very disappointed, as she thought I should have kept it for me.

I had decided to take it apart and remake it to fit me, but hey ho, it sold at the fair. I must admit it looked great on the customer, unfortunately this fabric is no longer available, but I am desperately trying to find something similar.

This week I received a request from Etsy, the buyer wanted this skirt custom made for her, she wanted a different size and colour

This is the completed skirt, it is made in a blue check fabric which is cut on the bias, allowing it to fall with gently folds around the legs.

My Ceanosus is Dying

My ceanosus otherwise know as californian blue or californian lilac is dying and there is nothing I can do about it. It has given me years of pleasure, and my neighbours have also enjoyed the beautiful flowers which appear in springtime.

I planted this beautiful shrub when I first moved into this house and it has grown into a small tree. It flowers in the spring and produces a beautiful show of blue flowers, but unfortunately this shrub only have a life span of 10 to 15 years, and I have had my for 12 years. Another thing that I was not aware of, it does not take kindly to being pruned back once they become established, which I have done, that apparently encourages decay. So sadly I think this will be the last year for my beautiful shrub. My little corner will be bare, it also hides my shed. I will be planting another, but it will take a few years to produce the elegant flowers of years gone by.

I have got this wonderful clothes stand on Ebay and it arrived today. Having done a couple of fairs with my standard clothes rail. I have found that its difficult to get noticed and I have to keep jumping out at people to get them to visit my stand.

With this stand I feel I will look more professional and the extending prongs will make it easier to display the clothes and buyers will get a better view and browse with ease. ( I hope). I am really impressed and excited, as my next fair is in two weeks time, so it I will get the opportunity to use my stand Yah!, Yes I know little things please little minds

I have booked into several handmade fairs for the summer and I have been making some new items for the season, this summer dress has already graced one of the fairs and got very favourable feedback.

I love the shape of this dress, I have added a contrasting sash which compliments the the print. The dress is cut with three panels in the front and lovely pleat detail at the neckline a back zipper and lined in fine muslin.
You can wear my summer shift dress with the sash for a more fitted look or wear without for a more loose fitting look either way it's a great dress.

Craft Fayre

I attended my first craft show this year, the attendance from the general public was below average and this can be disheartening, but all said I learnt something from this.
What you ask did I gain?

I gained an opportunity to PROMOTE my work: I was able to hand out my business card and invite people to visit my shop

I met some lovely people and was able to interact with the general public face to face. I received ideas from passing customers and custom requests

It’s hard to keep positive when you are working alone and sales are not coming in. Receiving immediate comments from the general public was great it provided VALIDATION of my work and help maintain my enthusiasm.

How did I get this? Through eavesdropping, while customers were browsing, they can brutally honest when they think you are not listening, but it was worthwhile as this validate that I was not waiting my time.

The fayre provided an opportunity to meet other like minded people – other stallholders sharing and learning from our experience

So what next!

PATIENCE, I believe that the sales will come, and it about convincing customers that I am here for the long haul and not a flash in the pan and I believe that my commitment and hard work will pay off

ArtsyJewels is a collaboration of three addicted beaders, Pat,Helen and Ana.

Pat is retired from the 'real world' and enjoys making jewelry for several different outlets online. Her specialty is buying vintage jewelry and gleaning usable parts to recycle into wonderful new items.

Helen is still in the 'real world' and enjoys setting up booths at craft shows throughout the area. She has been a self-employed Manufacturer's Representative specializing in women's accessories, selling to gift shops, hospitals, retirement homes, casinos, museums and pharmacies (to name a few!) for the past seven years.

Ana makes jewelry for home parties - she excels at making elaborate sets. Once introduced to a style or concept new to her, she practices it and embellishes lavishly.

All are avid bead show attendees.

I've been in the cake and confections industry for 15 years and in June 2010, struck out on my own to unleash all my creativity.

Sometimes the greatest things come from unfortunate events. After all those years doing cakes, I was promoted and was in a corporate job for about a year and a half and unfortunately, the entire department was laid-off. Amidst all the sadness, my wonderful husband asked me, " What would you like to do to make you happy, truly happy?" I told him that I wanted to find my passion again for food and that is when I decided to go back to what I loved.So, that is how RRC was born.

All my candy is made with that love and if you don't see what you are looking for it just means I haven't photographed it yet or just didn't get that special request from you! I always love a challenge. I love to give an edge to chocolate by making anything from your typical chocolate roses to zodiac symbols, and fire breathing dragons. I also make a line of signature chocolate barks and I'll cover anything I can in chocolate. Chocolate covered marshmallows, pretzels, cookies and more!

Hi My name is Samantha, I live in a small tourist town in Australia where the koalas live right across the road in the bush right next to the beach where the native birds fly over and squawk all day and the air is fresh and clean

I love bush walking,photography, blogging reading and most of all i love to create one of a kind paper beads and paper bead jewellery.

Making paper beads is a long process but well worth the effort .

I start with a piece of paper, my favorite papers to use are scrap booking paper and card in pretty patterns so I can get lots of detail and texture on my beads. I occasionally use recycled papers such as newspapers,magazines and Christmas cards.I have also started painting my papers so I can have a one of a kind design. Each piece of paper goes through a long process of measuring and cutting each strip of paper. I than roll each bead and coat every bead in thick coats of a non toxic sealer and non toxic varnish. This makes them water resistant and very durable. The end result of my paper beads often amaze me and keep me thinking of new designs and techniques to try so I will always have a supply of a variety of different colours shapes sizes and styles in my studio.

I also enjoy trying new crafts, at the moment I am experimenting with bead weaving , I am trying to make many different styles of bead woven bracelets to suit all occasions.

Sewing and writing to me is an art. It is relaxing and I enjoy it very much. The things I sew are what I use myself to make things easier, and thought others would like to as well. I was born with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis and ADHD. Neither of the diagnoses was made until later in life. I am permanently in a wheel chair and can not walk. If it was not for the proper medications I would not be able to move my fingers or be able to write or sew. God is the reason I have the strength to write and sew and live each day of my life.

Many of my items are one of a kind. My home is pet friendly. My cat Zorro is my bio picture.

One of my focuses is kids, teens, and young adults with disabilities from birth or from injuries due to accidents. There are so many younger people that live with disabilites, myself one of them. I chose fun, bright, bold colors and fabrics for that very reason.

Loose Fitting Tunic

This week I made this lloose fitted tunic, I made in light weight cotton voile in the latest all over print,. There are decorative pleats on front neckline and sleeves. The light weight cotton voile makes this top perfect for the holidays. The top is the same as the maroon top but I think the print gives it a totally different look. What do you think????

I wrote this post for Handmade in Europe, and I would like to share it with you

International Women's Day - March 8th

You may or may not be aware March 8th is International Women’s Day, it is an annual event, which is held throughout the world to inspire women and celebrates ordinary women as makers of history.

It is rooted in the century old struggle of women to participate in society on an equal footing with men. In Greece Lysitrata initiated a sexual strike against men in order to end war. During the French Revolution Parisian women called for liberty, equality, fraternity and marched to demand women’s suffrage. In England, women were demanding the right to vote, their greatest triumph is reflected in attitudes to feminism in women’s struggle for emancipation and equality and has been rewritten as a happy bra-burning contest.

The idea of a day for women began at the beginning of this century in America and Europe
The first international Women’s Day took place on March 19th 1911, this included rallies and organised meetings in countries such as Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. March 19th was chosen as it observes the day that the Prussian king promised to introduce votes for women in 1848. The promise gave hope for equality but it was a promise that he failed to keep.

International Women’s Day was moved to March 8th in 1913. Today International Women's Day is a time to reflect on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of women's rights.

Although much remains to be done to achieve full equality, the voices of women are being heard. March 8th provides an opportunity to reflect on progress made, and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of women’s rights.

The International Women’s Day logo is green, purple and white and features the symbol of Venus, which is also the symbol of being female.

Denim is considered a reliable wardrobe staple, but what if your don't wear jean, which is what normally thought of when you think of denim. For me my trusted staple is my denim skirt.

I love denim skirts; I have a black, one, a grey and a white.

For us skirt lovers I made this this cute denim skirt in a slight A line style

The skirt features pleats to the front and belt loops with a decorative print belt which ties to the front.

The skirt has a fly zip closure and decorative top stitching

I made this dress for a client who wanted it as a gift for her friend

The dress it made from batik cotton with pleated detail at front neckline and gathered waitline, pockets at side seam and belt made with two contrasting print fabric and edge trim forming the extention to fasten the blet.

I think you will agree that she love the dress judging by her comments
Comments: Finally arrived in the mail today and the dress is even more gorgeous in person!! I can't WAIT to give this to my friend! She's going to love it, for sure!!.........I'll let you know what her reaction is to the dress, but I already know she's going to love it. :) Seriously, excellent craftmanship. I might be contacting you again soon to propose another dress project!! I'm working on final fashion illustrations right now. :) I can show it to you later on and see if it's something you think you could do.............Gave my friend the dress today and as predicted, she absolutely LOVED it!! She loved the fabrics we chose and was admiring the design of the dress. She couldn't believe what an excellent copy it was of the original Anthropologie dress. :) It's definitely a keeper.

My Blogging Diary

I have never had the inclination to write a diary or a journal, but the blog have enable me to see what I have achieved over the past year and unlike a diary it does not include my whole life, only the bits I choose to share. 1: It would bore you all to bits if I blogged about my every action. 2: There are sections of my life which would be unacceptable to share, some of which would compromise my working role and 3: Well I am sure there is a 3 and more, but I cant think of any right now.

However along the way I have met some great bloggers, and I have appreciated everyone comments, and like good friend, your comments are an inspiration in motivating me to continue blog and show off my creations. I am not stupid, as I know it is not to everyone taste, and the comments reflect the honesty of those who comment.

I have also learnt what HTML is, how to add a photo and text link, yeh is easy now that I know and there is so much more that I have learned, and I hope to learn even more.

Looking at what I have achieved over the year I feel I need to set some goal for 2011, so here goes.

1: I must change the carpet in the hall and the lounge, not sure whether to put carpet or laminate down.

2: Must must build a new shed, the old one has no door and there are gaps between the frame and the windows.

3: I am planning on moving Jobs- need to look seriously this year

4: Organize my fabric stash

~~5: Resist the temptation to buy new fabric - no this is not possible, scrap five~~

5: Make some new stock for my shop as I am attending several fairs this year

You know something I feel that's enough for now, this leaves room for improvement and change.

I write on here as it is a recording of my intentions, rather bubbles in the wind. I will be letting you all know if I achieve any or all these goals.

Cooking With Fire

As some of you may or may not be aware my paid job is supporting people who find it difficult to engage in society to live fulfilling lives, and to do this I train volunteers and match them to individual people, I also run a weekly support group.

At Christmas I generally provide a meal for my clients and to save on the budget this year I decided to cook, yeah I cook as well.

Now in the summer my brother laid my new laminate and in the process he found that my all singing all dancing cooker had burned a hole in the floor board. For no reason that I can I explain, I decided to cook chicken pieced in the oven and make a macaroni and cheese pie, IN THE OVEN - I did attempt to cover the floor hoping that the cooker would not burn my new floor, DUH! WRONG!

Did I worry when the kitchen filled with somke? Did I worry when my eyes started to sting? Did I worry when I saw flames glowing under the cooker, HELL YES.

Panic setting in I filled a pan of water and threw it under the cooker, NO JOY, so I tried again success, flames disappeared, I waited checking and fearful that the flames were slower creeping under the floor boards, but fortunately the double pan of water did the trick and a full blown fire was averted.

I have not the heart to look under the cooker to examine the damage. Ignorance is bliss.

Oh the food? the clients loved the food and the staff lapped up the left overs.

I am still avoiding the moment of truth, would one of you be willing to check it out for me?

First Craft Fair

On Saturday I attended my first craft fair, I survived and it was great. The day before I wished for snow, so that I would have a reason to cancel. On the morning there was no snow, but the car was frosted over, and the streets were clear, heavy sigh! I had no reason to cancel, the ice on the car was easyly scrapped away. There was ample petrol in the car so I turned the ignition on while I loaded my stuff, made it so much easier to scrape the ice off the windscreen, and I had a warm car to start my journey.

I set off to Leigh teffified yet excited, got lost but I arrived in good time. There was a car park nearby with loads of parking so it was easy to access the community college where the fair was being held. I unloaded my car and hauled my stuff up to the second floor, my excersise for the rest of the month. I was tucked in a corner between a jewellery and vintage stall. I set about drumming up bussines.

My Stuff

The venue was lovely and warm although outside was near freezing and the other traders was great, very helpful and friendly. Although I only sold one item, I received numerous compliments about the quality and fisnish of my clothing. I gave out over 200 hundered cards with many visitors asking for custom made items. I am still dizzy with the success.

Its the Weekend

Well it's that time again and it's the only time I have available to say hello to all you lovely people. Things have been so busy at work lately. I have been getting to work late, staying late at work and staying up late to finish projects. Yeh I know get the violins out. You know something I enjoy the challenge. So no violins.

It's not all been good, my manager has been at it again, after spending a week writing a 32page proposal she decides that her name has to go my proposal, yeh what a cheek, needless to say I ignored her, so we are meeting on Monday to discuss this.

Now the good. I have completed a custom order and I am about to start on another one. The hardest thing is making for someone you can't see and choosing the fabric for them based on an email conversation, but I can only hope that I have chosen well.

Well it has been a long time and my computer is all fixed. How are you all doing and what have you been up to, I will have to take time to catch up with everyone.

Kentwell Hall

I would like to share with you a trip I took some Carers and their cared for on in August. We visited Kentwell Hall in Suffolk. Kentwell Hall is a beautiful Tudor house which was built in the 15th century and is surrounded by a water-filled moat complete with numerous carps (fishes).

The house has been lovingly and authentically restored to how it would have been in its heyday.

The gardens around the house are very pretty and include oddities such as a carved tree house and an old underground ice-house, this is an amazing place as there is so much to see. The gardens are wonderful including a in the veg garden or potagerie as it would have been called in the 15th century

For a few weeks each year, it returns to the 15th century with up to 300 re-creating "Tudors" going about their business. You get an opportunity to see archers and woodmen in the 25-acre grounds to those making bread and butter and people going about their daily lives in the main house and around the grounds.

I went back to work on Monday, so less blogging for me
On Tuesday I went to Southend for a meeting and on the way back I visited some of the charity shops. I bought a brand new laptop bag and these beautiful scale with the weights. I have cleaned it and it looks lovely on my kitchen counter. I am going to buy some cherries to display, ummm might be prove an expensive buy if I am thinging of displaying cherries year round in it, but tomatoes will have to do in the meantime

Completed Party Dress

Finally finished my dress for Sunday, as you can see, I not the tallest of people, and my top half is far larger that my bottom half. The dress is fairly fitted and made with a slight stretchy fabric. It has a V front and back neckline, and although I wasn't sure about the sleeves, but I put them in anyway. the front around the stomach area is ruched so hides my no existent waist and love handles. Believe it or not it comes to my knee, now you see why I make my own.
